Summer Meetings

Will be held at 7 p.m on Tuesdays evenings in the Maritime Museum.

The Friends are moving to Tuesday evenings at the Maritime Museum for the summer months of May, June and July, then back to Sunday afternoons during the winter.  It is hoped this will promote increased attendances.

Three interesting events have been arranged and a look round part of the Museum, to which you and your guests will be very welcome.

The April Meeting

AGM and Members’ Contributions

The Business of the AGM being dealt with, four items were offered by members.

Eric Greenough related lending a hand in the construction of a dinghy in Portugal – in a garden shed!  He travelled to join a member of the Friends of the Lisbon Maritime Museum who he had met on previous visits.  Eric’s expertise was principally called upon to fit the rigging though he also shared in heavier work forming the hull.  Eric’s talk was illustrated with slides of the finished vessel and some of the other skilled volunteers at work.

Robert Swain related the history of the Carnforth Station Clock, in particular the account of its renovation and installation to its rightful location in the 1980s.

Complications on a truly international scale concerned the Zimmermann Telegram and other communications that were sent (or cunningly, not sent) between Germany, Russia,  United States, Mexico, Japan, Great Britain during the First World War.  Secret Code books had been obtained by devious means.  These goings-on were elucidated by John Lean who had obviously conducted much research.
